We all want to look and smell good but unfortunately most people are exposing themselves (and those around them) to a dizzying array of chemical in the pursuit of beauty. Using a natural deodorant is one of the easiest swaps you can make- as long as you find one that works!
Considering the importance of our lymph system for detoxification, it’s wise to avoid antiperspirants. We are meant to perspire! And you certainly don’t want to be rubbing aluminum (found in antiperspirant) right on a prime detoxification pathway. Even conventional deodorants are filled with chemicals and synthetic fragrances so it’s great to use a natural deodorant instead. Find one you like and it’s an easy swap- you’ll be healthier for it!
Ruckle Heritage Farm just released a natural deodorant cream that can be found at our farm stand at 1801 Beaver Point Road in Ruckle Provincial Park on Salt Spring Island, British Columbia, with a 50ml jar selling for $15. The ingredients are simple: calendula infused organic olive oil, beeswax, arrowroot powder, baking soda and lavender essential oil. We used to make the deodorant with coconut oil but changed the formulation to a salve base using our own farm grown calendula infused for a moon cycle in olive oil and then turned into a salve using beeswax. The beeswax, along with the lavender essential oil, gives it a beautiful aroma. Calendula is also anti-microbial and is even said to help inhibit hair growth. If you aren’t local, e-mail marjorie@ruckleheritagefarm.com for information on how to purchase.
Ruckle Farm employee Abey Scaglione has been using this homemade deodorant for years and finds it to be incredibly effective. She says, “If I forget to put it on I smell awful after a day on the farm. But as long as I rub a small amount on clean armpits, I smell totally fine!” One of our deodorant fans says she loves the new formula as it smooths on to skin even easier and doesn’t tend to separate the way the coconut oil version did. However, if you want to make a special order of the coconut oil version, we are more than happy to help!
Come to the farm stand and try it for yourself and visit the farm’s adorable Nigerian Dwarf Goats at the same time!
